Updating Browsers and Widevine CDM

In late 2024, Widevine ceased support for certain versions of browsers and OS (operating systems). Widevine is an encryption framework offering DRM solutions to secure high-quality videos and audio.


Supported Browsers and OS Versions


MUBI supports the newest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on Mac & PC. Please see mubi.com/devices for a list of our supported devices. Linux users must use Chrome.

Additionally, some OS versions, such as Windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported. We have linked the provider's instructions on how to update these below.

If you are not able to upgrade your OS, or are using a supported browser, and still encounter this issue, you will need to update Widevine CDM. Instructions how to do this on your browser can be found below.

To ensure compatibility, follow these links to update to the latest browser version:

While you might not be able to update your OS to the latest available version, you might still be able to update it to a newer version that supports updating your browser.


Updating Widevine CDM Manually


If your browser and OS are up-to-date and you still experience playback issues, updating the Widevine CDM may help.


  • Chrome & Edge: Type chrome://components in the URL bar. Find Widevine Content Decryption Module and click Check for update.

  • Firefox: Go to Settings > Extensions and Themes (bottom left) > Plugins. Locate Widevine Content Decryption Module and set updates to On.
